Description:
I had done a lot of work with dragons, and really I wasn't as pleased with the way some of them came out as I knew I could do better. My dragons mean a lot to me. They are very intelligent creatures the way I think of them; graceful, like a snake, but usually represented more cat-like, or even more human-like with articulate nimble hands and expressive features.
I had been at a convention talking with Michael Whelan (an artist whom I greatly admire) about the previous work I did with dragons, and he agreed that on some of them, it looked as though I got bored doing all the scales. If you're bored, and you rush through, it really shows. I wanted to prove to myself that I had the patience to do every single scale, and I wanted to do a painting that represented one of the dragons in particular from the game my friends and I had been playing.
This is one of my favorite pieces. Once I put the original up for sale at a convention, but I am very glad that I still have it.
